This week, our students have been inspired by the powerful theme of this year’s Black History Month – “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” Throughout the week, Mr Cole, Head of Year 7 has introduced the theme and its significance through a thought-provoking assembly for Year 7 to 11.
Every October, the UK celebrates Black History Month—a time to honour Black heritage, challenge injustice, and recognise the individuals whose contributions have helped shape our society. This year’s theme aligns with Ark’s core value of bravery, encouraging us to reflect on the courage of trailblazers who stood firm in the face of adversity and helped build a better Britain.
We’re spotlighting four inspiring figures. Lilian Bader was among the first Black women to serve in the RAF during WWII, advancing to Leading Aircraftwoman and proving that talent and determination cut through barriers. Claudia Jones, the Trinidad-born journalist and activist, founded the Notting Hill Carnival and championed Black voices through the West Indian Gazette. Doreen Lawrence, now Baroness Lawrence, turned personal tragedy into national change by campaigning for justice after the murder of her son Stephen, leading to vital reforms in policing and race relations. And Benjamin Zephaniah, the acclaimed poet and performer, has brought poetry to classrooms and stages nationwide, using his art to speak powerfully about justice, identity, and hope. As we celebrate their legacies, let us carry their courage into our classrooms and communities, standing firm in power and pride every day of the year.
