On Wednesday 13th November 2024, Ark Blake's History department marked this year's Remembrance Day with an engaging and thought-provoking session, featuring a special guest speaker from the Croydon Airport Trust. Year 9 students were provided with an invigorating insight into the vital role played by Croydon's two airports in the Battle of Britain and both World Wars.
The session brought history to life, enhancing students studies of the Second World War with real-world connections to their local community. Students learned about Croydon's strategic importance, as it was not only the first major international airport in London, but also served as the UK's only international airport until 1959. This historical landmark played a crucial role during the conflicts, serving as a base for military operations and a hub for early aviation advancements.
Beyond the fascinating details of wartime aviation, the event emphasised the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, offering a poignant reminder of the human stories behind historical events. The speaker shared anecdotes and archival photographs, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to reflect on the lasting impact of the wars on their local area.
Ark Blake Academy is committed to providing enriching educational experiences that extend beyond textbooks. Sessions like these foster a deeper appreciation for history and help students understand the importance of Remembrance Day in our community.
